Proameixa is a company dedicated to the cultivation of bivalve molluscs that carries out its activity in the Ría de Arousa and was a pioneer in the suspended cultivation of clam spat using “bateas” (Galician floating raft to grown bivalves in suspension). Since 2005, the founders of this family company, thanks to their life dedicated to the sea, have created tools and ways of working that allowed them to optimize the different aspects of the process. All their knowledge and passion for aquaculture have enabled them to start from scratch and consolidate in the sector, being the reference company in the cultivation of clam spat in Galicia.
WHAT DOES PROAMEIXA’S WORK CONSIST IN?
The work carried out by Proameixa begins with the selection of the broodstock looking for a resistant and quality spat as a result. These broodstock are sent to the best hatcheries, where spawnings are induced and larval culture is carried out. After reaching 1.5-2 mm, the spats are grown in the “bateas” distributed in structures such as cages and lanterns (a set of trays surrounded by a tubular net, which has been designed by Proameixa) until reaching the optimal seeding size. Finally, clams are seeded in cultivation parks and shellfish banks until they reach commercial size, also with an interest in repopulating the natural environment.
WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF THE PRODUCT THAT PROAMEIXA WORKS?
They verified, at the beginning of their activity, that the clam that was seeded on beaches came directly from the hatcheries with a size ranging from 7 to 11 mm, which had a survival of approximately 50%. In light of these results, Proameixa decided to bet on taking the spat to a larger size, between 15 and 20 mm. This size allows a survival of around 95% because a larger size allows the clam to bury itself better in the substrate and defend itself from the different predators existing in its environment and from adverse weather conditions. Seeding spats this size also has the benefit of a shorter growth time on the beaches.
FUTURE EXPECTATIONS:
During its history, Proameixa has always aimed to grow with innovative projects in order to improve and offer the best possible quality in all aspects. Currently, future expectations are to continue improving the ongrowing of clam spat, in addition to other species.

QUALITY CONTROL AND TRACEABILITY
Throughout the process, each of the batches that are grown in the bateas is controlled, analyzing physical-chemical parameters and pathogens. In addition, the traceability of the different items is carried out from the moment they are introduced into the raft until they leave. All spat movements are accompanied by the relevant administrative procedures, also offering this service to its customers.
